Euclid, OH – -

By: Chas Wolfe, March, 03, 2010

In our day and age of real time communication such as; Twitter, Facebook, Text messaging, and other online social medias — do we hardly find an elite level basketball player that comes out of the woodwork. Almost a replay from the movie Blue Chips, where the Coach (Nick Nolte) goes deep into the Bayou to reach out for Neon Bedoe (Shaquille O’Neal).

I found myself in Euclid, Ohio Monday night to watch a kid that I have only seen on film, heard about through emails, researched through neighborhood sports columns and tracked through online box scores. He goes by “Tree” as in Demetrius Treadwell. Treedwell, who’s a legit 6-foot-6, 2010, SF is a mighty Oak Tree in the forest of Cleveland, averaging 23 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks on the year . Treadwell didn’t disappoint on his final night at Euclid High School helping his team improve to 14-5 and land a huge victory over high-scoring and favored Mentor 80-78 on Senior night. Treadwell put on a show, as he poured in 34 points, ripped down 16 rebounds and sent back 8 shots on a script that was picture perfect.

Tree already owns a college build, as he’s a legit 6-foot-6, carries above average length, shows quick-twitch athletic ability and his mannerism is cool, calm and collective –as he stretched out for the near 20 minutes of warm-ups with a straw in his mouth before putting on a post series clinic. His drive and motor is similar to a “hemmy” –as he brings plenty of power and torque. His hands can be compared to a NFL wide-receivers, as he catches near everything and uses his athletic ability to grab second effort rebounds and 50/50 balls in-and-out of his area. His shot is fluid and smooth, as his elbow is tight giving him proper form and release on his turn-around and he loves to go over his left shoulder or power his way through and around the opposition. The most impressive part of his game is his motor, as he plays for every possession and during one intense series when his coach was storming the court over a “bad call” Treadwell escorted the coach back to his chair showing the game was in his hands and shouting, “I got this coach”.

Treadwell who has passed his Ohio Graduation Test is working diligently to get his overall GPA up and is also preparing for the ACT entrance exam for college. College coaches from all over have been pouring interest into Treadwell, but he’s only concerned about his team, grades and finishing out his senior year on a good note.

Euclid plays tonight at Solon High School is the Division 1 Sectionals, as they look for Treadwell to carry the load.

For some teams that slipper will become a reality and for others it will become a pair of Air-Force One’s used for cutting grass or saved for a better day.

Grab your calender, palm pilot, Ipod Touch or Blackberry and mark down some of these dates and games that we have on our District Dockets. There’s hundreds of games to choose from, but we wanted to take a look at a few that will feature some top prospects and potential State champs.

Canton, OH. –

A tale of two-halves, 3-thousand fans and an entirely different pace was the deciding factor in the Federal League Tournament championship game on Saturday night, as Massillon Jackson prevailed over North Canton Hoover 63-44.

Fast forward — North Canton Hoover lead 25-23 at the half, but Jackson lashed out numerous offensive spurts in the second half and Hoover could not match their momentum or answer Jackson’s call. Mike Fuline’s team lead 41-36 at the end of the 3rd.

In the final stanza the Polar Bears opened it up and put their foot on full throttle outscoring the Vikings 22-8 –holding Hoover scoreless in the first 3 minutes of the 4th quarter and literally running away with the game.

Jackson was lead by the Senior trio of 6-foot-7, PF, Mark Henninger’s 26 points, 11 rebounds and 5 swats. Side note: Henninger continues his impressive stretch of 44 games notching a double-double. Brad Dupont, a 6-foot-1, combo scored 11 points, but pitched 13 assists and pocketed 8 steals. High energy and athletic 6-foot-6 forward Josh Egner finished with 12 points — on numerous rim rockers!

The Vikings were cuffed the final 16 minutes of the game, as Jackson held 2011, guard, Nyles Evans to 6 points and 2010, forward Cory Veldhuizen to 4 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Evans and Velduizen came into the game combing for a near 33 points and are the paddles that row Hoover’s boat. Senior, Jimmy Wackerly lead Hoover with 14 points scoring a dozen in the first half and senior/shooter Danny Daugherty added 10 points.

Don’t be surprised if these teams meet again, as the Canton D1 District has Hoover and Jackson on pace to meet up in the District Finals. Will Hoover get back to the Regional? Will Jackson beat Hoover 3 times in the same year? Time will tell.

Jackson improves to 17-2 on the year and Hoover falls to 15-3.

Canton, OH–

Massillon Jackson captured the regular season title for the Federal League Conference, but this Saturday at the Memorial Civic Center North Canton Hoover will challenge for the tournament crown.

Jackson comes into the title bout 15-2 overall, as Hoover also comes into the ring 15-2.

Jackson won the regular season bout in overtime at home, but now on a neutral floor this could be an all out dogfight. Last year Hoover walked away with the tournament crown and also the Canton D1 District nets. Jackson was voted the number 1 seed at the recent coaches meeting, while Hoover received the #2 vote for the district tournament.

Don’t be surprised if this is the 2nd of a 3 game series between Hoover and Jackson, as they could face off against each other in the District Finals.

Jackson is lead by seniors post-players Mark Henninger (Kent State), Josh Egner (Akron) and guard Brad Dupont (Wheeling Jesuit). Hoover is also a senior laden team with Corey Veldhuizen, Tyler Fausnight, Jimmy Wackerly and Danny Daugherty.

X-factors for both teams: 2011, SG, Mike Shull for Jackson and 2011, PG, Nyles Evans for Hoover.

Akron, OH–

Stopped by the house (gym) that Lebron James built last night off the corner of West Market and Maple Street in Akron, Ohio — to catch the Fighting Irish take on Whitney Young outta Chicago, Illinois.

Akron SVSM out-blasted Whitney Young 79-64 and were lead by 6-foot-6, 2012, WG, Lorenzo Cugini and his 25 points. 6-foot-8, 2011, forward sensation Jakarr Sampson netted 19 points and was the only other Irishman in double figures.

Whitney Young was lead by dynamite 5-foot-9, scoring guard Ahmad Starks (Oregon State) and his 25 points. Starks went off in the first half dropping 22 points, including four three-pointers. Purdue signee’ Anthony Johnson added 12 points on the night, the most impressive coming from half-court as time expired during the 3rd regulation. 6-foot-8, 2013, PF Thomas Hamilton added a quiet 7 points, but showed flashes of having serious game. Keep an eye on Hamilton, his daddy was 7-foot-3 and young Thomas has all the tools to someday play on the center stage.

SVSM is now 10-4 on the year, but will be battle tested and paced with a fury of road games before they head into tournament action, as they set sail for Cleveland Benedictine, North Canton Hoover, Walsh Jesuit, Mansfield Senior and Canton McKinley. Benedictine is very athletic, long and deep with D1 talent. Hoover is a well oiled machine, smart and very well coached. Jesuit is lead by a talented 2012 guard in Evan Payne. Mansfield Senior is gritty, athletic and gets up/down. Canton McKinley is hungry and has shown the ability to compete with against the big boys as they are a top 3 team in the Federal League. So this will not only be a physical test for the Irish, but a mental test as well.

Ohio News:

6-foot-6/2010/WF/Mike Green from Dublin Coffman dropped 40 points last night with a win over Hilliard Davidson. The Akron signee’ knocked down five three-pointers en route to a career high.

Akron Buchtel remains unbeaten at 17-0 with a win over Cleveland Shaw 88-72.

Cleveland Heights improves to 14-3 with a win over University. Heights was lead Alfonzo Houston’s 19 points.

Cleveland VASJ gets past Bedford Chanel 55-50. Demonte Flannigan (2013) scored 15 points.

Warren Harding beat Zanesville 53-39. Harding was lead by Kennis White’s 23 points.

Midwest News:

Logan (WV) beat Wheeling Park (WV) 66-65. Noah Cottrill (WVU) dropped 34 points on the win.

George Washington (WV) beat Cabell Midland (WV) 68-48. Tyquan Goard had 13 points for GW.

Columbus, OH–

The 2010 McDonald’s All-American game will be hosted by Value City Arena this year on the campus of Ohio State University on Wednesday, March 31st. The host site will feature two future Buckeyes in Jared Sullinger (Columbus, (OH) Northland HS) and future front court teammate Deshaun Thomas (Fort Wayne, (IN) Bishop Luers HS). North Carolina leads the way with three future players participating in Reggie Bullock, Kendall Marshall and Harrison Barnes. First year Memphis coach, Josh Pastner has put together a strong class going into his 2nd year at the helm with nabbing Joe Jackson and Jelan Kendrick.

A total of 7 uncommitted prospects round out this years game (Terrence Jones, Cory Joseph, CJ Leslie, Josh Selby, Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb, Ray McCallum) many of which are getting recruited by the likes of Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, UNLV, Villanova, West Virginia,Syracuse, UCON, Indiana, Florida, Georgetown, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, and many more!

The McDonald’s All-American game is the “MECCA” of round-ball All-star games, as it showcases the future stars of the game. Ohio is no stranger to the game, as she last hosted the game back in 2003 and featured a local Ohio player some of you may have heard of — Lebron James (Game MVP).

East Roster:

Reggie Bullock, 6-6, W, Kinston (N.C.) – North Carolina
Tobias Harris, 6-8, F, Half Hollow Hills West (Dix Hills, N.Y.) – Tennessee
Kyrie Irving, 6-2, G, St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.) – Duke
Joe Jackson, 5-11, G, White Station (Memphis, Tenn.) – Memphis
Perry Jones, 6-10, F, Duncanville (Texas) – Baylor
Jelan Kendrick, 6-6, G, Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) – Memphis
C. J. Leslie, 6-8, F, Word of God (Raleigh, N.C.) – Undecided
Kendall Marshall, 6-3, G, Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.) – North Carolina
Jayvaughn Pinkston, 6-6, F, Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) – Villanova
Josh Selby, 6-2, G, Lake Clifton (Baltimore, Md.) – Undecided
Jared Sullinger, 6-9, F, Northland (Columbus, Ohio) – Ohio State
Deshaun Thomas, 6-7, F, Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) – Ohio State

Coaches: Dru Joyce (Akron SVSM) and Norm Person (Oak Hill)

West Roster:

Keith Appling, 6-3, G, Pershing (Detroit, Mich.) – Michigan State
Harrison Barnes, 6-7, G/F, Ames (Iowa) – North Carolina
Terrence Jones, 6-8, F, Jefferson (Portland, Ore.) – Undecided
Cory Joseph, 6-3, G, Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) – Undecided
Brandon Knight, 6-3, G, Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) – Undecided
Doron Lamb, 6-4, G, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) – Undecided
Ray McCallum, 6-1, G, Detroit Country Day (Beverly Hills, Mich.) – Undecided
Fabricio De Melo, 7-0, C, Sagemont (Weston, Fla.) – Syracuse
Jereme Richmond, 6-7, W, Waukegan (Ill.) – Illinois
Joshua Smith, 6-9, C, Kentwood (Covington, Wash.) – UCLA
Tristan Thompson, 6-9, Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) – Texas
Patric Young, 6-9, F, Providence (Jacksonville, Fla.) – Florida

Coaches: Eric Flannery (Lakewood St. Eds) and Carl Kremer (Cincinnati Moeller)

MVP Predictions:

East — Jared Sullinger/Ohio State

West–Brandon Knight/Undecided

Inside Scoop: Don’t be surprised if you see a couple of these undecided prospects committing to Kentucky by April. UK is on the hunt and have many official visits lined up for this 2010 class. One of the toughest college decisions will be for Michigan native Ray McCallum, as he will need to choose to stay home and play for his father Ray Sr. at the University of Detroit, or take his game on the road (Arizona,Florida, Oklahoma UCLA, etc). Next, don’t be shocked if you see guard Cory Joseph call on Texas or Minnesota, considering his brother (Devoe) is already hooping for the Golden Gophers and Findlay Prep teammate Tristan Thompson is heading to Longhorn country. Josh Selby has recently taken a visit to Arizona and also has a trip planned to Kentucky in the near future. Brandon Knight is focused on finishing out his senior year, but don’t be shocked if this scoring machine stay’s south (Florida or maybe even Miami-Fl).
